Love was in the air – a love for the Taos Central High School Falcons, who were paid a tribute by the Taos High School Tigers and their fans on the appropriate holiday: Valentine’s Day.
The Taos Tigers were playing in their season and home finale against the Robertson Cardinals, and a sizable crowd was on hand to send off the seniors on the team and to honor the “fabulous Falcons” — the players and their families — on the 50th anniversary of the team’s crowning achievement: a state championship in basketball.
An extended halftime was granted for the ceremony. Warm words were spoken from Robert Trujillo, Taos High School principal, and Nickie McCarty, athletic director. It set the stage for a communitywide commendation that included congratulations from the current Taos Tigers players.
Proclamations from the New Mexico House of Representatives were signed by Rep. Roberto “Bobby” J. Gonzales, D-Taos County, and from Taos Mayor Dan Barrone. The proclamations were presented to the honorees along with certificates of acknowledgement from Taos High School.
The night began with a reunion dinner for the members and their families. The team will be honored in a similar way at the state basketball tournament championships March 11.
