Opening ceremonies note the blend of 'God, family, friends and community'

The opening ceremonies for the Fiestas de Santiago y Santa Ana de Taos on Friday (July 21) were both solemn and a joyful celebration of the event's 2017 theme 'God, Family, Friends and Community."

The ceremonies began with a Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church where this year's Fiesta Reina Savannah Romero and Princesas Gabriela Pérez, Ariana Baca and Mariana Jimenez-Gonzales were crowned.

Then, those present joined a procession to Taos Plaza led by members of the Taos Knights of Columbus and church leaders. As the outgoing reina, Marissa Vigil, gave thanks to all for support during the previous year, introductions of local dignitaries and members of the Fiesta Council, and blessings given, the fiestas officially began.

The event continues through this weekend featuring dancing, music, foods and more. For the full schedule of activities and profiles of all the queens and their courts, pick up a copy of Tempo magazine inside this week's edition of The Taos News.
