Alleged armed robbery, carjacking defendant from Ranchos remains in Colorado jail

Tranquilino Louis Valencia, a Ranchos de Taos man who was arrested last month in Alamosa, Colo. for an alleged armed robbery and carjacking that took place in Pecos, New Mexico, is still incarcerated at the Alamosa County Jail, according to Colorado’s Twelfth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

A story posted earlier this week to The Taos News website had incorrectly reported that Valencia had been released after a new warrant was issued for his arrest.

Valencia is wanted on a Taos Magistrate Court arrest warrant for “robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a violent felony; to wit robbery,” according to a notice that was posted on the Taos County Crime Stoppers website on Nov. 8 and confirmed on Tuesday (Nov. 14) by Chief Taos Magistrate Court Judge Ernest Ortega.

Valencia has other pending cases in other parts of New Mexico as well, leaving a question as to when he will be extradited to face charges in New Mexico and where he will first be transferred.

Ortega said that Valencia was arraigned on the Taos County charges in Taos District Court on Sept. 27 while he and another magistrate court judge were attending an annual training session. Valencia was released on a surety bond less than a week after on Oct. 2, Ortega said.

He then failed to appear for a hearing on Oct. 10, prompting the arrest warrant.

Valencia traveled south and picked up his most recent charges for crimes allegedly committed with two accomplices in and around Pecos. The trio allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint at an ATM in Pecos on Oct. 13. During the event, New Mexico State Police took one suspect, Francisco Araica-Avalos, into custody while Valencia and a 17-year-old girl, Terra Silva, also of Ranchos de Taos, evaded capture.

The Alamosa County Sheriff’s Department took Valencia into custody in southern Colorado the following day.

A request for comment from Colorado’s Twelfth Judicial District Attorney Crista Newmyer-Olsen regarding Valencia’s possible extradition was not returned by press time Wednesday (Nov. 15).
