FREE MEAL PROGRAMS are in place at Taos Charter School and Vista Grande High School. Students enrolled in these schools may participate in the breakfast and lunch programs at no charge, according to each school's program guidelines. For details, refer to each specific school's program.

HONDO-SECO VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT fund drive will be Sept. 8 for all businesses, then Sept. 9-10 for residents in the Arroyo Hondo, Arroyo Seco, Valdez and Las Colonias areas. Volunteers will collect donations door to door.

Acequias, water and neighborhood associations

BUSINESS OWNERS: Taos County Chamber of Commerce and Association of Commerce and Industry will host an event Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-noon, Old Martina's Hall, 4140 State Road 68, Ranchos de Taos, to hear concerns from and share policy positions with business owners. The ACI acts on behalf of businesses as a lobbyist to the state Legislature. The Taos County Chamber of Commerce is a member of the ACI. AARP SMART DRIVER SAFETY COURSE for people age 50 and older is Thursday, Sept. 28, noon-4:45 p.m. at Coronado Hall, 120 Civic Plaza Drive, Taos. Registration is from 11:30-11:50 a.m. This is a refresher class; it does not include driving or written tests. Participants can receive a discount on their insurance. Cost of the course is $15 per person for AARP members and $20 per person for nonmembers. Class members should not bring cash; make checks payable to AARP. TAOS EDUCATION AND CAREER CENTER is now offering high school equivalency (HSE/GED), career development, literacy tutoring and English as a second language (ESL) classes. UNM-TAOS is now offering a number of health career certificate programs, including emergency medicine, nursing assistant, medical billing/coding and more. UNM-TAOS HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (HEP) is now enrolling students. “We offer eligible participants (who have worked at least 75 days in seasonal or migrant farmwork in the past two years) assistance for books, meals and transportation needs while studying for your HSE diploma.” Classes are in Taos and Española, Mondays through Thursdays. Food assistance

HELP NM, INC. – CACFP. The organization provides help with out-of-pocket expenses incurred in an attempt to serve nutritious meals for children; non-taxable reimbursement for meals may be received in the amount of $100 to $600 per month. NORTH CENTRAL FOOD PANTRY operates in Questa, adjacent to Ancianos at 148 Embargo Road. Food is distributed there the second and fourth Friday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

CAT AND DOG SPAY/NEUTER, VACCINE PROGRAM: There is a new free spay/ neuter and vaccine program for town of Taos, Taos County and Taos Pueblo residents' dogs and cats. Lower-income pet owners in these locations and all feral/ outdoor/ barn cat owners are eligible for free dog and cat spay/neuter and vaccine services at Española Valley Humane, (505) 753-0228. The program is for dogs and cats from 8 weeks old up to 8 years.

CAT SPAYING/NEUTERING: Free pet cat spaying/ neutering is available with a voucher in Taos via Zimmer Feline Foundation. Call (505) 466-1676. Town of Taos, Taos County and Taos Pueblo cats are eligible for aforementioned programs.

Veterans
