2018 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR NEW MEXICO COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC LANDS. Meet the candidates Saturday (Dec. 9), noon-2 p.m. at Taos Mesa Brewing ("The Mothership"), 20 ABC Mesa Road, off U.S. 64 west. New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands is an elected constitutional officer in the executive branch in charge of managing all state lands and mineral rights, as well as overseeing leases and royalties on state land. He or she is responsible for generating and maximizing revenue from state land trusts while concurrently protecting, conserving and maintaining the lands for use by future generations. The money generated is used to support public education and other beneficiary institutions. Candidates include Garrett Veneklasen, State Senator George Nuñoz, and State Representative Stephanie Garcia will introduce themselves; talk about their positions on public land conservation, uses of State Trust Lands, clean energy development, and support for public education; take questions; and mingle with the crowd. Lower-income pet owners in these locations and all feral/ outdoor/ barn cat owners are eligible for free dog and cat spay/neuter and vaccine services at Española Valley Humane, (505) 753-0228. The program is for dogs and cats from 8 weeks old up to 8 years.
