Patrick Medina, 21, of Peñasco, died during a two-vehicle car crash Friday evening (Aug. 11) along Highway 75 near Peñasco, according to New Mexico State Police.
Officers responded to the scene of the accident near mile post 16 around 6:23 p.m. and discovered that Anthony Sanchez, 21, also of Peñasco, was driving a 2017 Hyundai when he apparently crossed into oncoming traffic. Medina was in the passenger seat and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Medina was pronounced dead on the scene by the Taos Office of the Medical Investigator.
Sanchez sustained serious injuries and was transported to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment. He was later taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuqerque, where he remains in critical condition, according to an update from Joaquin Gonzalez, director of Taos County Emergency Services.
The driver of the other vehicle, Gregory Mascarenas, 32, of Tooele, Utah, and two passengers also sustained injuries and were taken to Holy Cross Hospital.
State police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. No other details are available at this time.
