What appeared to be an argument over a $400 debt ended in gunfire, sending one man to Holy Cross Hospital Friday morning (June 16) with a bullet wound in his foot, according to the Taos County Sheriff's Department.

On Friday evening deputies arrested Paul Trujillo, 54, of Ranchos de Taos in the shooting incident, charging him with one count of shooting at or from a motor vehicle, one count of assault with intent to commit death or injury and two counts of aggravated battery in a dangerous manner. Each charge is a third-degree felony.

The incident began around 10:30 a.m. Friday, when Taos County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of gunshots fired on Este Es Road. They were joined by Taos Police Department and New Mexico State Police to investigate the area. Officers and deputies found a black BMW that had crashed into a fence and was riddled with several bullet holes. The driver, Jason Martinez, 34, of Cerro, had been shot in the foot. Thomas Tuskie, a friend who was with Martinez when the shooting occurred, was uninjured.

Based on statements made at the scene, police believe Trujillo had blocked his car with a Toyota truck, pulled out a .223 caliber AR-style rifle and opened fire. Martinez told deputies he backed the BMW up and then ran off the road into the fence. He said Trujillo fled in his truck.

Deputies and police found several shell casings and seized the BMW, which had several bullet holes in it, as evidence.

Deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Trujillo and a search warrant for his house. On Friday evening, they arrested Trujillo at his house without incident and found an AR-style rifle inside the house that they believed was used in the shooting. Deputies also recovered three 30-round magazines with ammunition at the residence.

Trujillo was booked at the Taos County Detention Center and is being held on a $20,000 cash only bond.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Tuskie was with Trujillo when the shooting occurred. Tuskie was a friend of Martinez and in the process of selling Martinez a car when Trujillo allegedly blocked the vehicle.
