The Taos Lady Tigers started their 2016-17 district season with a 45-42 win at home against the Pojoaque Valley Elkettes Jan. 18. The Lady Tigers pulled of the win in dramatic fashion, as Aaliyah Quintana hit a long-range three-point shot with 3.5 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Taos (10-8, 1-0) to victory.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for the Lady Tigers who have played in only one home game (versus Questa Jan.4) since Dec. 10. Prior to the district opener in Taos, Pojoaque Valley (8-9, 0-1) had been on a two game win streak.
The Tigers return to the road for their next district game against the St. Michael's Lady Horsemen in Santa Fe Jan. 21. St. Mike's (8-9, 0-1) is coming off a loss in their debut return to District 2-4A. The Lady Horsemen lost to the Robertson Lady Cardinals, 46-42 on the road Jan. 18. Game time is 7 p.m.
This was the second time in eight days that the hometown crowd inside Otero Gymnasium has witnessed a late-game shot go in for the win. Isaac Esquibel provided similar heroics at the buzzer to lift the Taos Tigers over the Los Alamos Hilltoppers Jan. 10.
