Rock (Roderick Gettys) Smith

Rock (Roderick Gettys) Smith recently died of a heart attack in his home in Taos.

Rock was born in 1947 in Woodstock Illinois. He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1965, Columbia University in 1969 and attended University of Chicago Law School. His varied careers included film editor, cook, teacher, musician but first and foremost he was an artist. His travels led him to life in Boulder CO, New Orleans LA, Alaska, Fort Meyers FL, Rockford IL and finally to Taos where he found his true home. In Taos Rock worked at various jobs including substitute teacher and caregiver at the ARC while he continued to pursue his art. For the last 13 years of his life Rock lived at Loma Parda, a community where he found deep and loving friendships. The Taos Library was another center of Rock's life. He was an avid reader and had unfulfilled plans to make a painting of the library to return the gifts the library had given him.

Rock is survived by his brother Roger Smith, his sisters Priscilla Smith and Pamela Smith, nieces Meghan McGarry and Asha Smith and nephew Timothy McGarry as well as numerous cousins. All will miss the light that Rock's love, brilliance, wit and humor brought to our family.

A memorial celebration of Rock's life will be held at Loma Parda community room at 1200 Camino de la Cruz, (off East Canon, across from the Charter School) February 16, 1:00pm. The family would appreciate your memories of Rock. They may be left at
