Taoseñas and Taoseños alike took to the streets to demonstrate against violence against women on the annual day of love (Feb. 14).
The march began and ended with a dance to the English and Spanish versions of the song “Break the Chain,” the movement’s official anthem.
The dance was led by Julia Daye, the local organizer who held practice in the weeks prior. The “One Billion Rising” movement was started in 2012 based on the statistic that one in three women will be raped in her lifetime.
In 2017, the “One Billion Rising Revolution” concentrated on highlighting the exploitation of women. The goal is to facilitate connections between like-minded people in their respective communities to demand an end to violence against women in all forms.
