Taos Lady Tigers
Taos Lady Tigers were shown the exit doors to the District 2-4A tournament - and possibly the 2017-18 season - with a 34-22 loss to the St. Michael's Lady Horsemen in Santa Fe Feb. 19.
The Lady Tigers ended the season as the leagues' No. 5 seeded team and traveled to St. Mike's who was the No. 4 seed for the first round matchup in the end-of-season tourney.
The Lady Tigers beat the Lady Horsemen earlier in the season, but have since faltered, losing eight straight games, to finish the regular-season and district tournament with an overall record of 7-19. Scoring issues have hampered progress of late, with Taos averaging just over 30 points per game during that stretch. The age and inexperience of the Lady Tigers was a major factor in the final outcome of this latest campaign; however, the talent and strength of other teams in the district proved to be a determining element as well.
Taos may have a chance to sneak into the state tournament field as they did last season. The Lady Tigers were 12-16 overall and 2-6 in district play in 2016-17 and were invited to post-season play as the number 16 seed. Ultimately, Taos was defeated by the No. 1 seeded Hope Christian Lady Huskies in the opening round of state tournament play.
Like last year, the Lady Tigers are currently lingering near the 16th spot of the class 4A rankings as the season winds down for other class 4A programs around the state.
Taos will have to wait until Sunday, (Feb. 25) to find out if they are invited to the state tournament or not. Seeding will take place a la selection committee, and brackets will be released by no later than 10 p.m.
