Tiger Sharks waylay stopwatch in Los Alamos; HS swim team heads to district meet in Santa Fe

The Taos Tiger Sharks resumed their club swim season with a gathering at the Bill Hudson Meet in Los Alamos Jan. 28-29. Held at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, the Taos team was represented by 10 swimmers who performed well in the 25-yard indoor short course.

According to Taos coach Alfredo Aleman, several Tiger Shark swimmers recorded personal best times at the high-altitude meet sponsored by the Los Alamos Aquatomics Swim Team.

Listed below are the athletes and the finishes in their respective events:

Dillon Brown – first place in the 200-yard freestyle swimming; second place in the 100-yard freestyle swimming; third place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming, 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard butterfly; and fourth place in the 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard individual medley (IM).

Aricela Chavez — first place in the 400-yard IM; fifth place in the 200-yard backstroke; seventh place in the 50-yard breaststroke; ninth place in the 100-yard backstroke; 10th place in the 100-yard freestyle swimming; and 11th place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming, 200-yard IM.

Gracie Goler – first place in the 200-yard freestyle swimming; second place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming; third place in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard breaststroke; and fourth place in the 100- and 200-yard IM.

Sarah Martinez – 17th place in the 25-yard backstroke and 18th place in the 25-yard freestyle swimming.

Maye Montoya – eighth place in the 100-yard breaststroke, 14th place in the 50-yard breaststroke, 16th in the 50-yard butterfly, 18th in the 100-yard IM, 19th in the 50-yard backstroke and 26th in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle swimming.

Ashley McMains – second place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming, 100- and 200-yard backstroke; third in the 500-yard freestyle swimming; and fourth in the 100 freestyle swimming.

Samuel Montoya – 19th place in the 25-yard freestyle and 21st place in the 25-yard backstroke.

Roman Quintana – 12th place in the 100-yard IM, 14th in the 50-yard breaststroke, 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle swimming and 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle swimming.

Estevan Salazar – fourth place in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle swimming; and seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke, 50-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle swimming.

Nathan Hernandez – second place in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle swimming, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard IM; and third place in the 50-yard freestyle swimming.

“Our swimmers’ performances were outstanding,” said Aleman. “My assistant coaches and I were extremely pleased with the outcomes. We are looking forward to an awesome club season.”

On the interscholastic side, the Taos Tigers swim team will travel to Santa Fe for the district meet scheduled to take place at the Genoveva Chavez Center Feb. 3-4.

Preliminary races will take place Feb. 3 with warmups beginning at 3 p.m. and competition at 4 p.m. Finals begin with warmups at 9 a.m. and competition at 10 a.m. Feb. 4.

Teams in District 1 include Taos, Desert Academy, Farmington, Gallup, Los Alamos, Piedra Vista, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Prep and St. Michael’s. The State Swimming and Diving Championships will take place in Albuquerque Feb. 17-18.
