Opinion: Wake up and enjoy the sounds of Taos’ live and local radio shows

Posted

When I started as a radio personality in 1981 I was so excited and thrilled to be given a chance to have a career in broadcasting. I started in overnights 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. After five months with the “Morning Side Kick,” I got a really good job offer as the program director. Five Months of doing overnights and now I am on the “Morning Show.” At this time all radio stations in the United States had a live DJ 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Now in 2017 that is not the story by any means. The invention and implementation of computers by radio stations changed all that. In a very small way at first, then dramatically, as computers today allow a DJ in Chicago for instance, to be on as many radio stations that the company that he/she works for, wants them to.

Years ago radio was the only place that you, the listener, could listen to New Music. Obviously today that is not the situation at all. We have the internet, our devices, and XM/Sirius Satellite Radio as competition to a medium that before the computer had none. As syndication became bigger and more profitable, and corporate radio downsized, literally thousands and thousands of “Radio Personalities” were all of a sudden out of a job. I-Heart Radio and Cumulus alone have terminated almost 20,000 DJ’s. However, as a lot of people got rich, many, many people had to search for another career.

I write this not as a forum to whine about the downfall of radio as a career. On the contrary, I write this to bring awareness to the incredibly talented, generous, funny, giving and gifted people we have doing morning radio in our small little village. We have at least eight people that wake up at ungodly hours Monday through Friday to bring you live and local morning radio. There are numerous cities and towns a lot bigger than Taos that don’t have anywhere near eight Live & Local Morning Shows. We do!

I will start at the beginning of the “Dial” and go up.

Taos’s Newest Radio Station is KRRT 90.9 Licensed in Arroyo Seco, NM and Public Radio.

KNCE @ 93.5 FM plays a variety of music and has over 90 DJ’s according to their website: truetaosradio.com. The early bird there is, “Wake up Taos” with Rita Daniels 7 a.m. - 9 a.m.

KKIT 95.9 The Mountain is Taos’s No. 1 Hit Radio Station Playing Top 40 Music hosted by yours truly Jeff Singer 6 a.m. - 10 a.m.

KLNN Luna 96.7 has Michael Dean playing adult contemporary music, and the longest Morning Show from 7 a.m. -12 Noon. Also Bleu in the afternoon 12 noon-6p.m.

KXMT 99.1 Radio Exitos is a Spanish Music Radio Station with Chicharron in the Morning 6 a.m.-10 a.m. and also Norberto Martinez in the afternoon 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

KKTC 99.9 and 100.7 “ True Country” is a Contemporary Country Radio Station with Elle in the morning 6 a.m.-10 a.m.

KTAO KTAOS Solar 101.9 is an Adult Album Alternative Radio Station with Paddy Mac waking up before dawn, and his Show is 6 a.m.-10 a.m.

Finally, last but certainly not least, is KTRZ Thunder 105.5 with Jalapeño waking up in the Dark to bring you Taos’s Only Rock Station, Playing Good Ol’ Rock-N-Roll.

As you can see above, we have a Morning Radio Show for pretty much any taste. Music, Comedy, Localism, Community Involvement, and generally very hard working radio personalities. I can give you numerous examples of towns and cities much larger than ours that don’t have anywhere near the amount or quality radio stations that Taos has.

Just to name a couple: Stockton, California with a population of 600,000 and Market Number 82 has three Live & Local Morning Shows. Buffalo-Niagara Falls, New York is Market #57 and has a population of 989,500 has only four shows in the whole city that are Live & Local. 270 Million People a week listen to their local radio stations daily, according to the latest Nielsen research. It is our hope, the Live & Local Radio personalities of Taos that you will listen as much as possible. If you have not discovered your favorite radio station in Taos, I hope that I can speak for all of us in saying, give us a try. Give us a listen and a chance to earn your ears in the morning. There are a lot of people waking up long before most of you to bring you great radio!

Singer is a Taos High School graduate, 35-year morning radio host – now mornings on 95.9 KKIT-FM (”The Mountain”) – and lives in El Prado.
