Young gymnasts rumble and tumble at Buffalo Thunder

The gymnasts from Taos’ High Altitude Athletics (HAA) competed at a meet hosted by the Los Alamos High Flyers at Buffalo Thunder Resort Feb. 24-26. The local team of athletes competed against other gyms from New Mexico, Colorado and Texas in the lead-up to season finales (state competitions).

Levels 2-9

The Level 2 team had some of its best scores of the year. Juniper Nykamp took first place on the bars (8.5) and placed sixth in the all-around. Sofia Amdur scored on the balance beam (8.8) and was seventh in the all-around. McKenna Coffman took the gold on floor (9.0) and placed fifth in the all-around.

Members of the Level 3 team fared well on vault. Jazmin Noble took the gold on vault (9.55) and third on bars (9.0). She placed third in the all-around. Riley Tucker scored on vault (9.1) and placed sixth all-around. June Allalunis took the gold on bars (9.6) and balance beam (8.75) and claimed silver on vault (9.4) and bronze on floor (8.8). She also placed first in the all-around. Kiana Romero-Weaver scored on bars (9.4) and came in sixth all-around.

In Level 5 competition, Beatrice Burton took the silver on bars (9.0), balance beam (9.0) and floor (8.95). She placed second in the all-around. Alexis Etzel took second on balance beam (9.125) and was fourth in the all-around. Violet Kirshbaum placed third on bars (8.7) and second on balance beam (8.85) and brought home third in the all-around.

HAA’s optional gymnasts also had a great showing. Members of the Level 6 team showed off their bar skills as Brandy Lee took second on bars (9.425), second on vault (9.4), third on floor (9.025) and silver in the all-around. Zeana McMains took third on vault (9.3) and bars (9.4) – coming away with a fourth place in the all-around. Ciara Salazar garnered bronze on balance beam (9.0) and placed sixth all-around. Tatyana Quintanilla took the gold on bars (9.425) and bronze on vault (9.05). She placed third in the all-around.

Team Level 5 also scored high on bars. Alyx Mastor scored on bars (9.35) and placed fifth in the all-around. Jackie Jagers took second on bars (9.40) and balance beam (8.75), plus third on floor (8.9). Jagers placed second in the all-around.

For HAA’s Level 9 team, Abby Gunther scored on vault (8.95), balance beam (8.8) and on floor (8.85). She placed seventh in the all-around. Ciara Murphy took silver on vault (9.05), scored on floor (9.0) and placed sixth all-around.

Xcel gymnasts

For HAA’s bronze team, Catalina Quintana scored on vault (9.125) and on balance beam (9.0), placing seventh in the all-around. MairiJane Cook scored on balance beam (9.0). She placed seventh in the all-around. Christina Gutierrez scored on balance beam (9.2) and on floor (9.0) – taking fifth all-around. Tirzah Ortega scored on balance beam (9.2) and on floor (9.1). Ortega earned the bronze in the all-around. Eleanor Rael took the gold on bars (9.0) and floor (9.35) and came in second place in the all-around. Bonnie Minter took first on balance beam (9.35) and brought home the gold in the all-around. Ava Collignon scored on vault (8.9), balance beam (8.9) and floor (8.9). She took fifth place all-around.

The silver team did a great job on vault and bars. Cameron Olsen took the gold on vault (9.3) and bars (9.35). She took the bronze in the all-around. Monique Jordan scored on vault (9.0) and on bars (9.2) and placed eighth all-around. Kailey Kelly took the gold on bars (9.3) and came in seventh in the all-around. Chloe MacHardy took first on vault (9.2) and earned sixth place all-around.

HAA’s gold squad brought home a second place team award with outstanding performances from all seven gymnasts, including Millie Caldwell, who took the gold on bars (9.1). She also scored on floor (9.0) and took sixth place all-around. Jaelynn Gonzales scored on balance beam (8.8) and floor (8.8). Gonzales took sixth place in the all-around. Anabelle Caldwell took first on vault (9.3) and scored on floor (9.2). She earned bronze in the all-around. Josey Corral scored on vault (9.025), bars (9.35) and on floor (9.3). She garnered a third place in the all-around. Tonalli Martinez-Parker scored on vault (9.4) and on bars (9.0) and came in seventh place all-around. Sofia Abrums scored a on vault (9.1) and on bars (8.95). She took fifth place in the all-around. Natalya Quintanilla scored on bars (9.05) and on balance beam (8.95). She came in seventh place all-around.

The HAA’s Level 8 and Level 9 teams traveled to Mesa, Arizona, for a competition March 3-5. The Level 2 and Level 3 teams traveled to Belen to compete in their respective state competitions. There were no results available as of press time. State meets will continue for the remaining levels throughout the month of March.
