UNM-TAOS HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (HEP) is now enrolling students. The program offers eligible participants (who have worked at least 75 days in seasonal or migrant farm work in the past two years) assistance for books, meals and transportation needs while studying for a high school equivalency diploma. TAOS COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY will meet for the pre-primary county convention Jan. 22, 5:30 p.m., at the party's local headquarters, 1341 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Suite 3, to elect delegates to the Republican state primary, which will be in Albuquerque Feb. 24.

AARP SMART DRIVER SAFETY COURSE for people age 50 and older is Thursday (Jan. 16), noon-4:45 p.m. at Coronado Hall, 120 Civic Plaza Drive, Taos. Registration is from 11:30-11:50 a.m. This is a refresher class; it does not include driving or written tests. Participants can receive a discount on their insurance. Cost of the course is $15 per person for AARP members and $20 per person for nonmembers. Class members should not bring cash; make checks payable to AARP. HOLIDAY BOOK AND MEDIA SALE at Shuter Library of Angel Fire is Tuesdays through Saturdays until Dec. 30. More than 700 new items have been added and most things cost $1 or less, including best-sellers, audio books, DVDs, puzzles and more. All proceeds benefit the Shuter Library of Angel Fire. EDUCATION GRANT DEADLINE from the Taos Chapter of The Native Plant Society of New Mexico is Dec. 31 for two $250 grants to any Taos County school and/ or schoolteacher who needs money for education or projects related to native plants in the fields of botany, biology or ecology. HELP NM, INC. – CACFP. The organization provides help with out-of-pocket expenses incurred in an attempt to serve nutritious meals for children; non-taxable reimbursement for meals may be received in the amount of $100 to $600 per month. CAT AND DOG SPAY/NEUTER, VACCINE PROGRAM: There is a free spay/ neuter and vaccine program for town of Taos, Taos County and Taos Pueblo residents' dogs and cats. Lower-income pet owners in these locations and all feral/ outdoor/ barn cat owners are eligible for free dog and cat spay/neuter and vaccine services at Española Valley Humane Society, (505) 753-0228.
