Avalanche warning issued for Taos mountains

The Taos Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning Friday (Jan. 17)  for backcountry area terrain in the wake of a storm Thursday night  that brought several inches of snow to the area.

The warning is in effect for the Wheeler Peak and Columbine Hondo Wilderness areas  from Friday through Saturday (Jan. 18) morning.

“The avalanche danger is expected to reach  high (Level 4) in the backcountry on Friday,” according to information from the Taos Avalanche Center. ”Natural avalanches large enough to bury or kill a person are very likely. Travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended during the warning period.”

“A storm Thursday into Friday with strong west southwest winds on Friday will create storm slabs at all elevations and aspects. As storm totals add up with the combination of strong winds on Friday, our persistent weak layers will face their first major test of 2020,”   reported Andy Bond of the center in a snowpack summary released Friday morning.  “Storm slab  avalanches have the potential to step down into these weak layers, creating a larger more destructive avalanche.”
