Ballet Taos keeps locals on their toes

Local dance studio recognized by New Mexico Small Business Development Center

During the 2018 Legislative Session, 20 growing New Mexico businesses will be recognized as “Star Clients” of the New Mexico Small Business Development Center statewide network, including Ballet Taos.

According to a press release, it only took eight months or so for Megan Yakovich to open Ballet Taos. Yakovich is the owner and operator of the dance studio where she teaches classical ballet as well as contemporary ballet and pointe. She also offers modern dance classes for both adults and teens.

Yackovich began working with the SBDC at the University of New Mexico-Taos office in December 2016 looking for help to write a business plan, organize a business and get a construction loan to start her own dance studio. She worked with adviser Marko Schmitt who helped her pitch The Loan Fund, an alternative lender located in Albuquerque. The Loan Fund recognized the potential of Yakovich’s idea and helped her get the loan she needed to remodel a studio into Ballet Taos.

“We are still new but have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. The Taos community is excited that Ballet Taos exists,” Yakovich said in a prepared statement. “The (SBDC) staff was knowledgeable and realistic! They helped me focus my passion and make productive choices.”

The students have performed in several sold-out community shows. They recently presented a production of “The Nutcracker,” and more dance shows are planned for 2018.

Ballet Taos is located at 1037 Calle del Sol in Taos. For more information, call (575)779-9128 or visit
