Balloons over Angel Fire launches June 15

Do something special for Father's Day weekend June 15-17 by visiting the free Balloons Over Angel Fire event.

More than 40 hot-air balloons lift off into the mountain skies over Angel Fire in the annual event hosted by the Village of Angel Fire. Weekend festivities include three days of mass ascensions, a Saturday night balloon glow, a variety of vendors, a pilot competition and burrito breakfasts each morning.

Other events also will be happening throughout Angel Fire and the Enchanted Circle over the weekend as well. If you see runners in the mountains, they might be participating in the grueling Angel Fire Endurance Run.

The event, first held in 2012, features races at distances of 100 miles, 100 kilometers, 50 miles, 50 kilometers and 25 kilometers. It is the only 100-mile running event in New Mexico, according to organizers. First held in the Carson National Forest, the race now takes place entirely on Angel Fire Resort property.

As for music, there's plenty. On June 15 beginning at 5 p.m., there's free music in Frontier Park featuring The Knotty Pines.

June 16 features Music Festival Eclectica sponsored by the Shuter Library from 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. at the Angel Fire Airport. Bands include Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers, Max Gomez and Baracutanga. Tickets are available at festivaleclectica.brownpapertickets.com and all proceeds benefit the Shuter Library.
