A bobcat climbed up a power pole over the weekend and shorted out power to residents in El Rito for an hour, according to Facebook posts from Kit Carson Electric Cooperative.
"The power went out on February 24 at approximately 6:45 a.m. and affected approximately 10 homes in El Rito (north) off Windmill Road. The power was restored at approximately 7:45 a.m. The voltage level on this line is 12,470 volts line to line," said Michael Santistevan, KCEC spokesman, in an email.
The bobcat, apparently, didn't survive the power pole perch.
"Two of our officers responded to the call. They found a dead bobcat with evidence of electrocution from contact with the power line," said Dan Williams, assistant chief information officer with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. "It appeared the bobcat had caught a rabbit and climbed the power pole when it possibly was startled by a dog. The officers removed the bobcat carcass."
