Forum scheduled for Taos Magistrate Judge candidates

The Taos Democratic Party will host the next in its series of election forums Monday night (May 18) for the three candidates running for Taos Magistrate Court judge.

Appointed in March to succeed Jeff Shannon, who now serves in Taos District Court, Sara Blankenhorn has served as a judge in the magistrate court for only about two months. Previously, Blankenhorn, 37, worked for six years as an attorney in general civil litigation and for one year as a prosecutor in Santa Fe.

Blankenhorn faces two challengers in this year's election, who had also applied for the governor's appointment: Edwardo Martinez, who spent 20 years with New Mexico State Police serving as a liuetenant in Taos County and Charlene Tsoodle Marcus, the former domestic violence program director for Eight Northern Indian Pueblos.

While not a requirement for judges serving in New Mexico's magistrate courts, Blankenhorn is the only candidate in the primary to hold a law degree. Her two challengeres, however, have more years of experience working in their respective ends of the legal field.

Those wishing to watch the forum, which will be broadcast via Zoom starting at 7 p.m., are asked to register in advance by emailing their request to taosvotesblue@gmail.com.
