Taos Mayor Dan Barrone joined about 80 town and county employees and other volunteers who braved snow and sleet Friday morning to pick up garbage along Paseo del Pueblo in Taos.
The main thoroughfare through town has been decried recently by residents and officials for a growing problem of trash. Plastic bags, mini bottles of alcohol, needles, shopping carts and more are often layering the sides of the road, visible to residents and visitors alike.
The hardy volunteers shrugged off the wet and cold to gather up bag after bag of trash, about 1,900 pounds total, according to county estimates, leaving the town a little cleaner on a dreary day.
"Thank you NM State Police, Sheriffs Dept., Taos P.D., .for keeping our volunteers safe. Special thanks to the Public Works Deptartment," wrote county solid waste director Edward A. Martinez in an email.
