At the request of Congress, a presidential proclamation by Ronald Reagan declared the week beginning March 7, 1982, as "Women's History Week." For the next five years, Congress continued to pass resolutions to designate a week in March in honor of American women's role in our country's history. The National Women's History Project petitioned Congress in 1987 to proclaim the entire month of March as Women’s History Month. That same year, Congress declared March as Women’s History Month in perpetuity. The combination of Elizabeth Cunningham's book "Remarkable Women of Taos" and Women's History Month are the inspiration for this special Taos News publication. Every year, Taos Woman aims to honor the extraordinary Taoseñas.
