Oklahoma City band Born in November returns to Taos

Clifton (C-Plus) Johnson and Woody Andrew, from Oklahoma City, have been playing music together for more than 20 years now. Johnson started out singing at the age of 2, and has been playing piano since age 3 or 4. Raised in his grandfather's church, Johnson has been influenced by gospel music, his mother's singing and musicians like Stevie Wonder and Ray C. Cooke. Andrew started up with music at age 6, and took up his drums at 16.

Johnson and Andrew first played together as part of a band called IV Shaydz. From there, the two joined forces to become Born in November.

Come out and listen to Born in November this Sunday (Jan. 19) in The Taos Inn's Adobe Bar, 125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Music is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the laid-back atmosphere of the "living room of Taos."

For their Taos show, Born in November will be playing their original music as well as covers. Some of the musicians they like to cover include Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Elton John, Maroon Five and Amy Winehouse. Their own songs are written by both Johnson and Andrew and veer toward rhythm and blues and soul.

Andrew promises their show is going to be "a lot of fun, a good time."

Johnson told me they travel to Europe often to perform. When I asked him where, he said they have been touring regularly in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Paris. Based in Oklahoma City, Born in November has been to every state in the continental United States.

Born in November first started coming to Taos about four years ago. "I love Taos," said Johnson. "We have a good time every time we're there. It's a beautiful place. It relaxes me."

Their latest recording, "Born in November 1310," has an "indie-rock" feel, says Andrew. It was released in 2015. Johnson and Andrew are currently working on a new CD, which they hope to have completed by the end of February.

"This one is more hip-hop, R&B, dabbling back in the '90s," Andrew told me. "The new vibe is more of an up-tempo, urban soul."

"We're doing more of a doo-wop funk with this new music," said Johnson. "It's been really fun. We're taking our time with it. We have our own studio - but we're always stopping at studios and laying tracks down - you get a different sound from different producers."

Andrew said the best thing about being in Born in November is that he and Johnson have become best friends.

"It's the loyalty and honesty we've had. We've stuck together. He's more like my brother. … We became family."

And, yes, in case you're wondering, Andrew and Johnson were both born in November.

There is no cover charge for their Sunday show. For more information, call the venue at (575) 758-2233.
