James J. Hagerty


James J. Hagerty, Age 71 of Taos, NM, passed away April 6, 2017 in Ventura, CA surrounded by his loving family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Theresa Hagerty. James was born in Des Moines, IA on Oct. 26, 1945 to Clarence and Theresa (Critelli) Hagerty. He is survived by his sons Gabriel Hagerty, Ventura, CA, Matthew Hagerty, Des Moines, IA, Jacob Hagerty, Taos, NM; sister Rosemary (Kenny) Harrier, Des Moines, IA; nephew Kenneth Harrier Jr., Des Moines, IA; niece Carol Harrier, Des Moines, IA. James grew up in Des Moines, IA, he attended St. Johns grade school and Dowling High School. After high school, James earned a Bachelor in Science in Electrical Engineering at DMAC, Ankeny, IA. When James was 8 years old, he stopped by a music store on his way home from school, the owner saw the passion for music in this little boy and said, “take it home.” His mother, Theresa Critelli, had been a successful singer in Chicago before marrying and encouraged his love for music, and later became the manager for several of his bands. James moved to Taos in 1969 and fell in love with the people, the mountains and the serenity of Taos. In 1971 James and Joy Sukow became the proud parents of Gabriel Hagerty. In 1979 James and former spouse, Janie Fraser became the parents of Matthew Hagerty and in 1982 Jacob Hagerty. James loved being a dad to his 3 boys and taught them so much about life, music, thinking outside the box and how to fix things!! He was helping his grandson fix up an old car just recently in California. In 1994 James moved back home to Taos and the mountains he so dearly loved. He was an amazing Musician, Entertainer, Songwriter, Multi Media Artist, Inventor with several patents in his name, educator and entrepreneur. James went back to college in his 60s and received a Bachelor of Arts from UNM Taos. He had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and truth. James and his son Jacob had a band called the Jacob and James Quartet for the past 10 years. He loved to play music for locals and tourists at the John Dunn Plaza in Taos and will be greatly missed by many. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 22, 2017 between 1-4 at Taos Mesa Brewery Mothership, located at 20 ABC Mesa Rd., El Prado, NM 87529. Please stop by!
