Metal heads mark your sick calendars for this year's Monolith on the Mesa Festival planned May 28-30 at the Taos Mesa Brewing Mothership, 20 ABC Mesa Road, off U.S. 64 west.
Organizers have just named 24 of the 40 bands invited to appear. They are Ruby the Hatchet, Mondo Generator, Duel, Earthride, Yawning Man, Great Electric Quest, Fatso Jetson, Wo Fat, Magic Castles, Warhorse, Sons of Otis, Mountain of Smoke, Year of the Cobra, Distances, Prism Bitch, Mondo Drag, Mars Red Sky, Yatra, Heavy Temple, Khemmis, Love Gang, Mad Alchmey, Mark Deutrom and Nebula.
The ambiance is a little different from previous shows, according to festival promoter Dano Sanchez. Its line-up is focused on heavy rock acts from across multiple sub-genres including stoner rock, heavy psych, doom metal, sludge, drone, and retro rock, according to a press release.
"Monolith on the Mesa is about the experience," Sanchez explains. "Our booking theme this year includes all the 'heavy,' but that doesn't necessarily mean heavy distortion. We also see it as 'heavy' in mood and presence. Psychedelic yes, and we really like it to get weird. In addition to our music selection, this region sets us apart. You can go to a festival that takes place in bars or in big parks, but there is no place on earth quite like Taos, New Mexico."
A statement from the Monolith on the Mesa team reads, "Our mission is to show appreciation to all the bands that play our festival. All of their hard work at band practice, in the studio, touring, living in vans, humping gear around to play for folks like us doesn't go unrecognized! Our hospitality tent is one that is safe and comfortable. A place artists can eat, get coffee or adult beverages, lounge on couches or at tables and catch up with their friends in the other bands in a communal environment. Last year we established a professional and friendly rapport with all the bands and intend to continue in that vein in 2020. Even though there is work involved in performing at the festival, we want the bands to enjoy the experience as a positive and memorable one."
This is a rain or shine event which means no refunds. For more on the event, visit monolithonthemesa.com.
