From handmade butterflies and rainbow flowers, to bright, flashy vehicles, splashes of color adorned all corners of Peñasco this past weekend during their annual Fiestas del Valle de Peñasco parade. Plastic bags in hand, locals and visitors lined the sides of State Road 75 to collect candy as it flew from the colorful floats.

The parade is part of a longstanding tradition in Peñasco to celebrate their community fiestas in memory of San Lorenzo, the patron Saint of the Picuris Pueblo. The 2018 Fiestas Queen is Joleen Romero, who was crowned by 2017 Queen Bianca Contreras in a special ceremony Saturday at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco. Taos Middle School student Mireya Sanchez and Peñasco Elementary School student Marisol Maestas continued their reigns as Senior and Junior Princesses. In this year’s parade, the Fiestas Princesses and Queen were joined by the 2018 Picuris Pueblo Warrior Logan Yazza and Princess Naomi Snake.
