The letter, que llegó with the box said that the parrot en la caja era un perico viejo. La Tía Cleotilde wrote that she had had the bird por muchos años pero que now that she was old, she couldn't take care of it. She was giving the green parrot a la Grama Cuca in hopes que ella podría cuidarlo.

Canutito had never seen a un perico verde tan grande. It was a smart bird y pronto el perico was saying things like: "yo me llamo Roberto" and he would call grama saying: "¡Cuca, ayúdame!" Canutito had never heard a un pájaro hablando.

"Are there algunos animales que pueden hablar, grama?" he asked her.

"Not many, m'hijo," Grama Cuca replied. "Algunos pájaros can whistle y algunas ranas cantan pero they are just sounds sin palabras. Nomás los pericos can say actual words cuando hablan como la gente."

Canutito thought por un momento and then he said: "Alguna gente canta como las ranas, grama," he smiled slyly. They sound just like frogs.

"Now, behave, m'hijo," grama said. "It isn't their fault that some people sing like frogs; ésa es a voz that God gave them. Even though algunos cantan como ranas here on Earth, cuando sus voces reach up to Heaven, they sound como los ángeles."

(Grama Cuca didn't like to hablar mal de nadie.)

"Well, I suppose que tiene razón," Canutito replied. "Si alguna gente puede cantar como ranas then I suppose it is fair that some birds pueden hablar como la gente.

La grama would even ask the parrot ¿Quién es mi pretty birdie? ¿Quién es mi big boy? El perico Roberto would answer: ¡"Yo, yo soy!" Everyone was used to him.

Un día, después de la escuela, Canutito came home and he found a la Grama Cuca toda triste. He asked her: "¿Qué pasa, grama?"

"¡Ay, m'hijo!" grama sobbed. "Mi perico Roberto is dying!" She pointed over to the parrot's cage. El perico estaba en la jaula lying on his side con los ojos cerrados.

He looked como si estuviera agonizando. De repente, Roberto el perico gave a big grunt y cuando dio el pujido, out popped an egg!

Canutito looked en la jaula and he exclaimed, "Grama, how did this huevo get in here? I thought you had told me que el Roberto era un perico y no una perica!"

"Mi hermana, la Cleotilde, had kept al Roberto por veinte años y ella me dijo that it was a boy parrot!" Grama looked down a los cuatro huevitos that he had laid toda sorprendida. This was more of a surprise para ella que para Canutito.

"How do you suppose que el Roberto turned into la Roberta, grama" he asked. "I think que he decided de salir del closet y enseñarnos his true nature," she said.
