Six sheriff candidates and four people running for two magistrate judge positions in Taos County showed up to the first of three political forums hosted by The Taos News Thursday (May 17).

The first half of the forum was dedicated to the judgeships up for grabs.

Both magistrate judges have challengers for the Democratic primaries. Incumbent Ernest Ortega is running against Betty Martinez Gonzales while incumbent Jeff Shannon is running against Dominic Martinez.

Sheriff candidates spoke during the second hour of the forum.

In the race for Taos County sheriff, incumbent Jerry Hogrefe, of Red River, faces a slew of challengers for the primary and at least one for the November general election. Jake Cordova of San Cristobal, Ricky Medina of Arroyo Hondo, Bonney Gabriel Medina of Taos, and Eugene Holgate, III, also of Taos, face off against Hogrefe in the Democratic primary.

Jani Dean Davis is running as a Republican in the sheriff's race and has no challenger in the primaries. She will face off against the winner of the June 5 Democratic primary.
