On March 24, 1919 Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born. This year he celebrates his 100th birthday. In honor of this monumental occasion, Taos poet Anne MacNaughton will host an afternoon celebration of Ferlinghetti's poetry.
The event is planned Sunday (March 24), 2:30-4 p.m., at SOMOS, 108 Civic Plaza Drive in Taos.
Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti is an American poet, painter, socialist activist, and the co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers in San Francisco, California.
He is the author of poetry, translations, fiction, theater, art criticism, and film narration. Ferlinghetti is best known for his first collection of poems "A Coney Island of the Mind" (1958), that has been translated into nine languages, with sales of more than one million copies.
A statement on the City Lights website (citylights.com), states, "'Lawrence Ferlinghetti would like everyone to know that although he won't be attending any of the various events being planned to honor his 100th birthday, he's inviting everyone to participate and have a good time: 'I'm happy to hear that there are so many people celebrating my birthday. Makes it really special. I figure that with another 100 birthdays that'll be about enough!''
Admission is free to the SOMOS event. It is open to the public. For more information, call (575) 758-0081 or visit somostaos.org.
