A campground host at the Wild Rivers Recreation Area north of Questa died Wednesday (May 16) after falling from a cliff.

State police have identified the man as Owen O'Keefe, 72, the caretaker of the La Junta Campgrounds, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police.

O'Keefe died after falling nearly 200 feet while hiking with another person, according to authorities. Officials say the cause of the fall is unknown at this time.

First responders raced to the scene Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m. The state Office of the Medical Investigator, which investigates deaths, was also dispatched to the campground.
