Success Story: A&R Medical Supply: The right product to the right person

Posted

A&R Medical has ramped up its presence in Taos in order to distinguish the company as a prime supplier of durable medical equipment in Northern New Mexico.

For nearly 20 years, the Albuquerque –based company has been delivering home respiratory and mobility aid equipment through contracts with insurers, Medicare/Medicaid and hospice providers in Taos. The business has been growing so, in 2014, A&R decided to take the next step: A storefront in Taos.

Open for more than a year now, A&R Medical’s store at the south end of the Albertson’s shopping center, where manager Angela Martinez and service rep Amberly Romero welcome locals and provide personal service to all who seek top-quality medical equipment. Terence Chavez handles deliveries and warehousing

out of the same location.

“Taos is a small-town market, where people know each other,” says A&R General Manager Jesus Martinez, noting that all employees are Taos natives. “We want people to have a personalized experience, where they can get hands-on interaction with the products and the service reps so they can pick and choose the products they will be using.”

Because A&R has been supplying Taos for more than a decade, the staff has a strong relationship and understanding of the insurers who cover the Taos area.

“We keep track of the bottomline,” says GM Martinez. “We understand reimbursements, and have a long-term knowledge of the criteria for qualifying. In this and all aspects of the business, we go the extra mile.”

The staff also understands what works in this market, such as how the altitude affects respiratory issues and that most families want to keep their parents and grandparents in the home where they lived all their lives.

“One of the things that has made us successful is we pretty much know everyone – or someone related to them – who comes into the store or faxes in an order,” says Angela Martinez. “There are a lot of elderly people in this area, either native to here or retired here. And, we recognize that they best place to treat them is in their own home.”

Whether obtained at the store or through free delivery, A&R Medical customers get the highest quality of durable medical equipment available, Jesus Martinez says. Some of the newest product trends in the industry are:

Home respiratory

Portable concentrators convert natural air into oxygen, eliminating the need for canister refills, and nebulizers use compressed air as aerosol for inhalants. CPAP machines help those with sleep apnea to breathe easier and get a better night’s sleep.

Mobility aids

Traditional walkers and wheelchairs are now getting powered up, especially with

the growth of power scooters. A&R also carries a full line of stair lifts, vehicle lifts and bathroom safety equipment – plus orthopedic and vascular hosiery.

The Taos operation provides wound care,

cushions and supports, personal hygiene products, bedding and many more products. If it isn’t on the shelf, the company staff can quickly order it through its main distributor in Texas or nationwide vendors, and get it to the customer usually the next day.

“A&R is part of a larger buying group of medical supply companies, so we can get discounts on prices and the latest products quickly and

efficiently,” says Jesus Martinez.

The goal of the upgrade of service to the Taos market was to cover existing contracts with health-care providers on a larger, steadier scale than before.

“So far, so good,” the general manager says. “Our success is attributed to remaining personable with each customer, and treating each order like it’s the only one we are handling.

We emphasize efficiency and speed, so that we get the right product to the right person.

“In the end, we are helping people stay independent,” he says. “Our motto is: We supply your independence. And we believe we are doing just that here in Taos.”
