Tammie Fay Beltrand, née Stutz
Died in Innsbruck, Austria, on Sunday, July 30, 2017, due to a brain aneurysm, at the age of 51.
Tammie is survived by her soulmate and husband, Chris; her cherished son, Alex; her loving mother & stepfather, Patty Byrd & Bruce "Moose" Byrd; her loving father, Chuck Stutz; many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Tammie grew up in Taos, NM, graduating from Taos High School in 1984. She received her degree in Environmental Studies from Pitzer College in 1988. Her adventurous spirit led her to the Caribbean island of St. John, where her interest in the sea was sparked. In 1992, Tammie joined the U.S. Coast Guard, meeting her future husband during officer candidate training. Tammie attained the rank of LTJG and served onboard cutters and worked in the field of Marine Safety. Tammie & Chris married in Taos in 1994, and lived in various locations including Florida, Louisiana, Alaska, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Following her Coast Guard service, Tammie pursued her passion for teaching, earning a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Florida. Tammie taught elementary students in Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma, and middle & high school students in Stuttgart, Germany. Tammie enjoyed her work with children in gifted & talented programs, and especially connected with children who struggled, helping and challenging them to learn and explore. Moving with her family to Germany in 2013, Tammie immensely enjoyed the opportunity to travel to several dozen countries in Europe and the Middle East. Tammie's passions included her family, her dogs, antiquing, gardening, skiing, cooking, hiking, crafts, and anything that got her outside, active, and, preferably, left dirt under her fingernails. Tammie was a kind soul, who leaves behind a legacy of adventurousness, love, and friendship. She was fearless, full of light, and lived life to the very fullest. She made acquaintances around the world that turned into lasting friendships. Tammie was a caretaker to anyone in need. Her welcoming smile will never be forgotten. Tammie traveled the world but her heart belonged to Taos, where her ashes will be scattered. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration of Tammie's life on Saturday, August 19 at the home of Tammie's mother, Patty Byrd in Taos, NM at 5:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tammie's name may be made to Stray Hearts Animal Shelter, 1200 Saint Francis Lane, Taos, NM 87571, the ASPCA, or donor's choice. Life is so precious and so fragile; Tammie's sudden and tragic death reminds us of both.
