With athleticism, and personality, Matthew Lopez helped lead his Peñasco Panthers basketball teams through multiple rebuilding years. One stellar javelin throw at state capped his career.
Under the direction of first-year coach, Brandon Gurule, the Peñasco Panthers underwent a rebuilding year. Matthew Lopez did his part to be a leader on the court for a young squad tasked with turning a program around and squeezing out wins along the way. Named to the all-district team, he led all scorers in 2017-18. Lopez also found a calling in a specific track and field event as a javelin hurler. He won the event at the district meet in Questa April 28 and went on to place third with his personal best throw of 142 feet, 8 inches at the state meet May 5.
