Taos Pride gets boost from allies, businesses

After two months of organizing, a local LGBTQ ally has brought together hundreds of dollars in prizes for a raffle to benefit this year’s Taos Pride.

Renee Lynda Martinez, the raffle organizer, told The Taos News about the importance of having an annual pride event and making sure it is supported.

“I’ve always marched in the parades. It’s that visibility … to show Northern New Mexico that this is a diverse town and there is acceptance of the LGBTQ community,” Martinez said.

“As a straight Christian ally, I just cannot sit back and wait for things to be done to raise awareness and to support our local LGBTQ community. God has been so good to me and I want to pay it forward before I leave this earth. What better way than inclusion?” Martinez said.

Martinez told The Taos News that local businesses were “so quick to say yes” when it came to donating prizes for the raffle, which include a stay at Casa Gallina, non-GMO seeds, gift certificates to Taos Herb Co. and various restaurants and shops, as well as a hand-crocheted blanket and an original oil painting by Rob Nightingale, owner of Wilder Nightingale Fine Art.

Taos Pride is set for Aug. 11 and 12. The time of the parade will be announced in June.

The raffle will happen live on 93.5 KNCE-FM on April 21.

Tickets cost $5 and are available for purchase through the Facebook event, “Taos Pride 2017 Raffle Ticket Sales,” or by contacting Martinez at (575) 741-8856.
