Taos Ski Valley hosts shredding events to help breast cancer survivors

Posted

Boarders can shred for a good cause Saturday, (Feb. 23) during the seventh annual Boarding for Breast Cancer’s Shred the Love event at Taos Ski Valley.

The event also raises money for the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. Shred the Love Taos Ski Valley consists of two main events – the K2 Bumps Challenge and Paint for Peaks.

K2 Bumps Challenge is a marathon down Al’s Run, one of Taos Ski Valley’s most famous and popular mogul runs on the front face of the mountain. Skiers and riders can tackle the feat individually or in teams of two. They must raise a minimum of $100 to participate. For more information or to register and read all the official rules, head over to b4bc.org/stl.

Participants compete for prizes awarded to top fundraisers, top athletes and best costumes.

In the other event, artists turn snowboards and skateboard decks into unique pieces of art for the Paint for Peaks Snowboard Art + Silent Auction, Friday (Feb. 22) from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.  Among the artists who contributed pieces are Pat Milbery, Thomas Bowers, Christof Brownell, Maul Cha, Ken Feldman (Crookedman Gallery), Jisk27, Jim Keffer, Ira Lujan, Greg Moon, Kimberly Murak, Dan Vigil, Michael Vigil, Lynn Wolf, Dylan Zinn and Jason Rodriguez. Find more information at b4bc.org/stl.

Over the last decade, Shred the Love at Taos Ski Valley has raised more than $150,000 for B4BC’s education, prevention and survivorship programs and the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. Taos Ski Valley has also been home to many of B4BC’s Winter Chasing Sunshine Young Breast Cancer Retreats, where young women are invited to spend a weekend of skiing, yoga and healing.

All proceeds and donations from the auction and the on-mountain event will benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer and the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. Boarding for Breast Cancer is a nonprofit foundation that advocates early detection and a healthy, active lifestyle as the best means for breast cancer prevention. The Anita Salas Memorial Fund is a nonprofit that helps pay for women’s breast or cervical cancer treatment, and related bills such as transportation, lodging or medications for treatment. The women who are helped are moderate to low income and the funds go directly to pay for the bills. All of the funds raised help women in New Mexico.
