Flames and smoke quickly spread across a yard near a 12-unit apartment complex on Calle de Oro in Taos late Tuesday (June 12), drawing alarmed residents out of their homes.
According to Taos Central Dispatch, the yard fire was reported around 6 p.m. at a residence about a block west from where Calle de Oro meets Gusdorf Road. Flames began to lick a line of trees separating the private residence from the lower story apartment units located about 25 feet further west.
Diana Mather, a neighborhood resident who recently moved in across the street from where the fire started, said she came out of her home when she saw emergency vehicles – sirens flashing – on her usually quiet street.
"There were fire trucks going up and down the street," she said. "I came out to see what the commotion was about."
With the help of a tanker truck, firefighters doused the blaze, putting it out quickly.
The cause of the fire was unknown as of press time Tuesday evening (June 12).
The county-wide burn ordinance remains in effect.
